Song of the Day: City & Colour - Comin' Home

With a throbbing headache, stiff neck, and limited upper body movement, I decided to go to work and "work" through it by downing several aspirins with a large coffee as a chaser. Much to the chagrin of my co-workers, I stayed till about 11:00 before owning up to talk to my manager about the pain. After taking the rest of the day off, my next assignment was visit the walk-in clinic and have my head checked out. The physician told me I either have a mild concussion or a really bad headache. But to make sure everything is alright upstairs, I was urged to have x-rays of my head. The results come back soon. Let's hope nothing is wrong up there with thei noodle... sigh*

In good news, I have my own clothing line and its about time too.

Song of the Day: Panic! At the Disco - I Write Sins Not Tragedies

I don't think I have ever taken so many bumps and bruises from any sport as much as I have from curling. It's only been my second time I've been playing and I've already racked up several scrapes and bruises along with a headache from smashing the back of my head to the ice. The neck is still pretty sore and I've never had so many people ask me if I was alright. I guess I commanded the attention of all the curlers as I was flat on my back from an awkward tumble. Time to look into getting a helmet and knee pads. I guess I've never really participated in any activities involving ice. I do appreciate activities that involve steadier footing. Here's a pic of my beautiful left knee:

ahhh, the sleepless nights

Song of the Day: Braid - This Charming Man [Smiths cover]

... Whenever I go back to my hometown and see the people I grew up with -- many of whom are still living the same life we all had twelve years ago as high school seniors -- I realize that I was very much the exception. Lots of people (in fact, most people) do not dream about morphing their current life into something dramatic and cool and metaphoric. Most people see their life to be less complicated than it already is. They want their life only to have one meaning. So when they imagine a better existence, it's their completely imaginary or staunchly practical. The reason Garth Brooks and Shania Twain have sold roughly 120 million more albums than Bob Dylan and Liz Phair is not because record buyers are all a bunch of blithering idiots; it's because Garth and Shania are simply better at expressing the human condition.
- Chuck Klosterman

I haven't been able to keep a regular and healthy sleeping pattern since public school. One with suspect it's either from the excessive consumption of java or listless nights of partying. The reality is this book Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman of Esquire and Spin Magazine fame has kept me up to the wee hours of the morning. As I turn from page to page, I read essays of a talented writer who has captured my attention in print form. It's a light read that reels you in with quick references to pop-culture icons. At first it's a rather annoying gimmick to keep you interested, as he uses a lot of references, but as you further find yourself in his essays, he provides his two cents on certain subjects that you might find yourself thinking about when you finish downing the last Prozac pill pr 40 oz. of bleach.

Thanks Chuck for giving me the motivation to search for my inner Zack Morris. -- my pop culture psychiatrist --

break out the salami and cheese, momma!

Song of the Day: Annie - Chewing Gum

It was foolish for the Raptors to not hard foul Kobe last night when he dropped 81 on them in a game the Lakers should not have won. Now Kobe has validated himself as a legend as he solidifed himself in the record books -- doesn't impress me at all. The stat line in the game was 81 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. Talk about a complete player [sarcasm]. If he was really good, his assists would be significantly higher. Let's hope his teammates realize that they are just pylons that dispense passes to Kobe as he wins a game for himself. Realize that he could score 81 points in a season, win the scoring title for the '06 season and still the Lakers won't make the playoffs. David Robinson and Wilt Chamberlin actually took their respective teams to the playoffs and were true MVPs. Let Kobe have his accolateds, he'll NEVER be a winner no matter how hard he wants it. Kobe should start his own basketball franchise where it would be just him versus a team.

I'm all about Kobe hate. Hate, hate, hate ...

Black by popular demand

Song of the Day: Raised by Swans - Violet Light

Sometimes small talkin' the ladies is fun. Just don't make stupid faces at them as if you're surprised the bitches are jockin' ya and your buddies. Man, I screwed up. We should have stuck to the story of friends from outta town, venture capitalists from Vermont... AND the kicker, we're in 3rd year and undeclared! Who graduates anyways?!?!? I was chastized from the get go.

And me being in such a funk, the only thing that could cheer me up was this.

Oh, and did anyone catch that Swedish Chef impression Adam Sandberg did of the Muppet's character? Check it out!

Song of the Day: Madonna - Hung Up

"Every little thing that you say or do ... I'm Hung up, I'm Hung up on you" [Madonna]

It's about time Madonna Louise Ciccone recognized the Hungmeister. Ahh, the magic of 'google-ing' your name...

Anyways, I touched base on this on my last post, but I'm rounding third base and heading home in regards to watching Scrubs in a sequential order. It will be a full week this coming Wednesday and I'll have watched three complete seasons of the very funny show. I don't get easily attached to shows, but this is definitely worth it.

Everyone in the KW area who has any affliction for gambling has been talking about this guy Steven Paul-Ambrose. And who can blame them. This guy won 1.3M US dollars in the WPT poker tour. That's one helluva horseshoe for this 3rd year Science and Business kid! And since he won this tourney the first few days of January 2006, he is also the world money leader in the WPT. That's along the likes of Scotty Nguyen, Phil Helmuth, Doyle Brunson... Imagine Steven telling his kids that he was once the world's best player in poker monitarily speaking. Oh, and he's also on the same basketball team as me this year! I haven't told him yet, but I'm hoping he could use the money to sign us Ron Artest. We could use a solid on-the-ball defender. Whadduya say Steven! Here's a clip of the luckiest guy in town.

In my infliction

Song of the Day: Sufjan Stevens - The Dress Looks Nice on You

Ah television... You grow up fixated on this cube angled in the corner of your livingroom as bright colours illuminated the room projecting sights and sounds of mostly a fictional world. I could honestly say that television became very unnecessary when in school, but now it has taken a whole new role. I still don't watch many shows but the few things I do enjoy have kept me pretty much sane for the past few weeks. I can see why some would plug themselves on the couch after hard days work at the office. It's so mind numbing and pleasant as it takes away from you using your brain to think about the troubles that your facing in your life. Needless to say, this was what I prescribed to myself this past week. Basically, the series called Scrubs owns me right now. Since Wednesday, I've watched the entire first season and now I'm projected to finish the second season by Tuesday night. I'm not the one who would watch a show religiously, but I think I could make an exception this time around. Move over Ghostwriter and Sesame Street, you've got company.

This weekend was also marked with high anticipation and celebration of a quarter-century of existence for one of my close friends. This would also mean that the fab three would be back together again just like old times. When you've spent some of the hardest times of your life to date with such great friends, it might be hard for someone to fathom the elation of this moment where the three of us could put everything aside and enjoy each other's company. And in true Cedarbrae fashion, I can say we all had a great time.

Happy New Years

Wednesday, January 11, 2006 by .::Hung::.

Song of the Day: Laura Veirs - Secret Someone

I apologize about the last post as I forgot to wish everyone a happy new year. May all your resolutions come true. Let's just hope all the people at my gym lose 10 pounds quick so it won't be so busy. It's still early in the year with only one week of classes gone by. When do midterms start again??? I hate to say this, but midterms can't come soon enough!

Anyways, as you can tell I'm slowly and surely slipping in an insomniatic path staying up to the wee hours doing what have you. So the activity for tonight was laundry at 1:00 am! I'm three loads into it too! I also had the luxury of sorting through all my CDs as well. Here's what's missing and doesn't belong to me:

Missing:

  • Foo Fighters - Colour and the Shape
  • Rossini - Miscellaneous Overtures
  • Meet the Deedles Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
  • Counterfit - Pop Machine Glow
  • Metric - Old World Underground, Where are You Now? [missing the case]
  • The Vermicious Knid - Smalltown Devotion/Hometown Compulsion
Not Mine: [but soon will be]
  • The Weekend - Beatbox My Heart [the case]
  • Thursday - Full Collapse [the CD]
  • DJ Shadow - Endtroducing [I think it's my roomie's]
  • Death Cab for Cutie - You Can Play These Songs with Chords [Best of]
Don't think I don't have Fat Tony's number on speed dial on my phone. I can have the Mafia and the poison fists on the Pacific Rim at your door ransack your dorm rooms in no time flat.

Also, if anyone is reading this in the KW region, can you guys recommend some doctors, dentists, optometrists, and any other professionals. I'm looking to get hooked up proper in the '06. Brop!

mirror, mirror on the wall...

Wednesday, January 04, 2006 by .::Hung::.

Song of the Day : Gwen Stefani - Luxurious

So like a mirror, let me take this time to reflect on the year that was 2005. Parts of ths past year went by so fast, while others dragged on too long. Let's see what happened to Hung...

1) met some great friends
2) graduated university
2) entered the working world
3) still living with great roomates
4) attached to the treadmill [though it doesn't show]
5) developed a liking for cbc radio 3 podcasting
6) deeply miss all my university friends who have left me in waterloo

And with the ever diminishing patience to listen to complete albums (I blame mp3s), here is a glimpse of my greatest musical discoveries of 2005. Some may not have been released in '05, but this is when I discovered these musical gems. These songs range across the board, so check 'em out and if it's what you like, let me know how the album is too!

A) Mood Ruff - Rocket Ship
B) M.I.A. - Bingo
C) Nada Surf - Au Fond D'Un Rêve Doré
D) Lady Sovereign - Random
E) Vermicious Knid - Century Soldiers
F) Of Montreal - Disconnect the Dots/So Begins Our Alabee
G) The New Pornographers - The Bleeding Heart Show
H) Glass Candy - Life After Sundown
I) The Inflation Kills - When Clones Come
J) The SS Cardiacs - Wolfie's
K) Sufjan Stevens - Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois
