Song of the Day: Weezer - Sliver (Nirvana cover)

It's been 10+ years since I first saw weezer on an episode of Entertainment Tonight where they featured the works of Spike Jonze on the Buddy Holly video. Fortunately for me, people young and old alike, still have much love for Rivers and co. So much so that the Air Canada Centre was brimming with thick rimmed glasses, pocket protectors, and sheer nerdom. Boy, did I feel at home. From the very first note of 'My Name is Jonas' I was set reeling back to 1994 once again. Sweat beaded down my face and stinging my eyes, but I did not miss a single beat, lyric, pelvic thrust. I could still feel the butterflies (whether the age of 14 or 27). For an hour and a half, my life was perfect.

I must say it was the best =w= setlist I've ever been witness to and I've been to 6+ weezer shows in my life. One highlight was definitely Pat paying tribute to Noel Gallagher and belting out 'What's the story Morning Glory' and challenging any hooligan to try and un
earth him from the stage. Fortunately, there were no takers (Toronto doesn't seem so tough these days eh!). The ultimate highlight would have to be Weezer's (a la Goat Punishment) cover of Sliver (on the Bleach album - way before Dave Grohl had ever joined the band). Kurt would have been proud, Courtney would have demanded royalties, Dave Grohl would have air drummed the shit outta the track... A friend of mine mentioned that it'd probably be the only instance in our lifetime that we'd ever hear Sliver in a stadium setting. I took this opportunity to sing and dance like a baffoon. Kinda surprised that the people around me had no clue what song Weezer was playing... (shame). Anyways, hopefully my voice comes back to me. I need to speak at a meeting tomorrow.

Anyways, I'll tthrow some pictures up soon. Special thanks to Craigslist for hooking me up with some steller tickets. I don't think I could have sat any closer. Super respect knuckles goes out to the UW Alum who hooked me up proper (brap)!

UPDATE: Okay, so now my neck is tremedously sore. I think I maybe have taken up some head banging last night. If I knew I was going to head hang, I would prepared myself by wearing some old flannel shirt and scuffed army boots. Anyways, here are some photos from last night. Damn, I was close...

Tokyo Police Club

Angels and Airwaves - Yes Tom, please STOP and reconcile with Mark and Travis for the sake of music.

The Weez - Gimme so mo' Rivers!

Cross Functionality

by .::Hung::.

Song of the Day: Madonna - Give it 2 Me

Cross Functionality - It's been the catch phrase of the moment. I love it how much it has been preached over the years to promote lateral movement opposed to rising amongst the ranks. Does cross functionality provide added value to personal growth? Long term, I would hazard a yes, but has it ever been cited as a lack in focus and direction? Seems like a catch 22 to me...

Anyways, the reason for this topic is increased instances of semi-famous celebrities seemingly out of there perceived environment. Whether we're shielded the celeb's personal life, during this day and age, I personally find it fascinating that some celebrities have a whole different side to them from their public persona. Does this mean that these b-listers are merely in the act of updating their curriculum vitae? Here's the list of celebs who are doing things totally different from their past life.

1) Brad Daugherty - All American basketball player from the state of North Carolina who is one of the greatest basketball players for the North Carolina Tarheel history. This five time all star was the first overall draft pick in the 1986 NBA entry draft and enjoyed right years as the starting centre/forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now you can find Brad as a NASCAR analyst on EPSN's NASCAR COUNTDOWN, NASCAR NOW, on ESPN! Totally wasn't I would have expected for a solid centre for the Cleveland Cavaliers. There are totally some stereotypes associated with NASCAR, but I don't think an ex- NBA all star would fit the mould. Way to go Brad!

2) Matt Dunigan - This declared CFL quarterback was a staple amongst the record books spanning the early 80s to mid 90s. This charismatic quarterback tried his hand as analyst for TSN's CFL coverage as well as several stints at coaching the sport he loved. Now in a turn of events, Mister Dunigan has his own TV series on the FoodNetwork called Road Grill. I guess all that time spent football, generated the desire to assemble a mirage of great culinary creations. To add to the TV series, Dunigan also has a cookbook to match. Easy on the salt and carcinogens Matt! wait, I think I see the grill is burning! Quick, audible and get you and you team outta the kitchen!

3) Bonecrusher - Lastly, I was flipping through the channels and low and behold, I saw Mister Crusher himself on Iron Chef America as a guess judge (Apparently, he;s been on twice now). I was hoping he would be more descriptive when critiquing the dishes. Maybe break out a little lyrical freestyle? This wasn't that great of a stretch, being a rapper and guest judge on a culinary show. Everyone's gotsta eat right? Attenchun!

Song of the Day: She & Him - Sentimental Heart

Wow, it's definitely been a while since I've tapped into this kegger of blogging. I guess I've been keeping busy. You know, standard foraging for food and supplies in preparation for the Autumn. It seems like yesterday that I was voicing my excitement for the summer. Ever since returning from my West Coast escapade, I've focused on enjoying what is dearest to me. This summer marked the first full year living in Toronto. I felt undone pressure to get to know my surrounding a bit better. Family, friends, and foes alike are going to expect I know something about my place of habitation. Tyranna is slowly, and agonizingly winning me over. I still have major hesitations and reservation
s of this place (You could never bee comfortable in the principles office right?). So things that has got me warming up to the big smoke:

1) Toronto International Film Fesitval
Locals must love and hate this event. You have celebrities pillaging through your lovely city while paprazzi jossle for the ultimate "Brangelina" photo. On the other hand, there is a plethora of intersting films are your disposal. Even though this is my first taste of movie madness, I think I could really get used to it. It's one more step meeting Larissa Olyenick! All I ask is for the fesitval organizers to upgrade their online ticketing system. It's totally archaeic.

2) Summer Concert Schedule
Not one week goes by in the city without an amazing musical act heavily laying a 'beat-down' to all too willing concert goers. I was hoping to see more, I am content that more shows will come. I was fortunate enough to see Two Hours Traffic, Duchess Says, Forest City Lovers, The D'Urbervilles, Maria Taylor, Jonathan Rice, Liam Finn, Laura Veirs, and Mates of State! If I didn't break my friend's camera, I'd post the photo of the coolest kats in organ rock - Kori and Jason. In consolation, here's me and Laura Veirs.

3) Recreational Sports I miss this stuff so much. I don't know how I forgot how much I love football, soccer and basketball. I can't wait for the new season to start. Whether it's competitive for considered a beer-drinking league, I welcome all recreational sports. I must say it's helped me acclimate to Torontonians. Randoms bumping into you or offering distasteful looks, really starts to wear at your impression of inhabitats of Toronto. The folks I've met throughout the summer in the sports league really made my summer. I look forward to many seasons of trash-talking and beer-drinking!
