A shocking discovery

Song of the Day: Laura Veirs - Bedroom Eyes

Plagiarism happens all the time. But when a famous band becomes so unoriginal that their songs are blatently similar a classic, something has to be said. RHCP have become everything they didn't want to be. Domesticated, drab, and dare I say it, boring. Get back to the good shit man.

EDITORIAL: A Petty Case of Red Hot Plagiarism?

I also checked out the video for RHCP's Dani California and I thought it was lame. They make fun of other famous musical outfits and then the show themselves rockin' out, bouncing across the stage like buffoons. So does this mean that they are mocking themselves or are they showing everyone that they are better than the rest? It was cool like fifteen years ago, but now its lame.

And speaking of terrible, a friend showed me just how bad K-Fed's musical taste really is. "This is a Brazilian ass shaker right here" hah! This video is pretty ahrd to find! There's so many different versions of it circulating the internet.

The Less of Two Evils

Song of the Day: The Anniversary - Hart Crane

So after an excruciating day of struggle I tend to want to veg out. All I want to do is zone out and do nothing but stare at the pretty colours eminating from a black box about 10 ft away from my eyes. I came to the conclusion that when nothing is on, MuchMusic and MTV Canada tend to be the frontrunners in garnering my undivided attention. My question is, have you seen what's on these speciality channels at of late? Absolute garbage.... Garbage that I habitually watch... It's sickening.

MTV has been k
nown to have emphasis on its shows rahter than the music, which is fine. I knew about it prior to MTV making its way to Canadian homes. I must admit some of the shows are rather entertaining. I mean who brought us the first forms of reality television? Did the Real World not capture the essence of reality TV in 1992? MTV has really accelerated in pop-culture programming and I think it's still on top of things in that sense. Today, I happen to catch Grant Lawrence of CBC Radio 3 Fame on the Live to air segment of MTV's primetime slot. The topic was something like podcasting, so I was really interested in what questions they had for Grant. It ended up being a waste of time (for me at least and hopefully people felt the same way too). Anyways, MTV comes off at a huge tool for marketing firms to extract infromation from teens as to what will sell a few months from now. It's funny because everytime I watch a segment fo MTV with Q&A, it reminds me of that Simpsons episode where marketers overtake Springfield elementary and basically run tests on the students to marketing products.

On the other hand, MuchMusic has turned into a celebrity gossip channel where fewer videos are played and more talk is involved. And when videos are the focal point, it ends up being a show where the audience is exposed to 4 videos and voting takes place to see which one is aired. How can you watch a videos three times within thirty minutes? Punch Much? Who can I punch that is responsible for this trite? Where do i sign up? The speciality programs that do expose an audience to the cutting edge of video are aired at like 11:00pm as night or in the wee hours of the morning. Thanks MuchMusic for ruining a channel I thought was innovative and cutting edge to today's citizen. Now I get the same shit, but on two channels.

I can't win either way, but which one can I sit through without punching myself to death?

high school bands that rock!

Song of the Day: Minus the Bear - The Pig War

Tonight marks the first impromptu night of seeing a live show in Toronto. The outing was rather successful. The show wasn't at capacity, but it was a busy place with an energetic crowd. Plastered all over the outside of the Elmocombo are posters for 20hz (kinda lame). Anyways, the Lovely Feathers rocked the house with a barrage of spastic riffs too crazy to comprehend. Music so intense that slobber was no distraction for greatness. Kerni and I had to laugh because there was soo much slobber/drool! The main event was the Spinto Band from Delaware. These kool kats look super young. I mean really young. The drummer could have been straight out of a Full House episode. These guys were like young enough to be finishing 11th grade. The thing that threw me off was there the bassist mentioned that they've played NXNE in Toronto a few years ago. Did they tour when they were like 15? And on a side note, imagine this ... You just finished another year in high school and for the summer, you travel around with your sextet rock outfit through out North American or wherever... Wouldn't that be a cool way to spend the summer?

Anyways, I heard of these dudes through the magic of myspace - a social networking giant as of late. After seeing one of the three guitarists embrace his special edition, wood finished Gibson SG, I knew I was going to be blown away (MC, you would have been jealous of this guy's axe). After the first few super catchy songs, comparisons to the Beach boys, Rooney, of Montreal and the Beattles were surfacing in my head. It had to do with the head movements and the knee/jerk maneuvers that yielded comparisons for me. The vocals were eerily reminiscent of Brian Wilson. Bonus points for these guys for incorporating a mandolin in one of their songs, which I thought was their hit single. Have a listen to "Oh Mandy" and tell me what you think. The night was capped off with a super sweet cover of the ex pop princess herself Tiffany and her hit single "I Think we're alone now". Super hot, super fun!

Up next, I try and score Band of Horses tickets at the door next Tuesday. Wish me luck!

Don't be fooled by her charming smile and big bright eyes

Song of the Day: The Pipettes - One Night Stand

Believe it or not, Dora the Explorer is single handedly ruining hockey one city at a time. First it was a scheduling conflict with the Ottawa's Scotiabank Place Senators and now there's a possible scheduling woes in Edmonton's Rexall Place for Stanley Cup playoffs. What's her beef with hockey anyways? I think Dora can take her band of animal friends and conquer some city who doesn't own a hockey arena or coliseum. Could she be in cahoots with Bob Goodnow to get back and the NHL and the NHLPA for his dismissal? I smell conspiracy theory!

You've been officially unpimped!

Song of the Day: Okkervil River - For Real

So what's the story here? Did X to tha Z Xzibit get canned from Pimp my Ride and replaced by the Germans? With the World Cup closely approaching, the Germans need more exposure. What better way than to celebrate its rich tradition of fine German engineering. It also shows that Germans can be funny too! These commercials are funny! Reprezentin' Deutchland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
