Are you doing this for yourself or for me, your family?
Song of the Day: Coldplay - Fix You
I don't think I've ever seen a movie that spoke to me about my own struggles as much as this "chick flick" Spanglish. Initially, I was drawn by the cast: Tea Leoni and Adam Sandler. What's the worse that could happen? Adam Sandler will get into his only known character where he becomes a 5 year old boy trapped in a man's body having ocassional hissy fits. The movie definitely was ont he other end of the spectrum. I was just blown away on with the undertones of the movie. There were some truely momentus scenes where I reflected upon my own past. Doesn't really ever happen, so this was a pleasent surprise. It's definitely a film loaded with many racial issues, one would identify with in a heartbeat.
Growing up, I was really care free. As a naive little kid in a small podunk town. That place represented the world. Needless to say it wasn't the world my parents' world envisioned. I mean they were seriously stuck between a rock and a hard place. Do you let Western civilization emmerse your child in an unknown culture or do you raise him knowing what his or her background is. I mean there always a happy meadium, but sometimes as parents I can see where they are losing grip. I mean when it comes to geographic location and cultural gatherings, some are more predisposed than others. It's a tough balance because as parents foriegn to a Western society, the education system really does overwhelm and engross the child with a vastly different culture. I mean I've seen it in myself and now my little cousins. As a youngin' the last thing you wanted to do was learen the language and God forbid speak the language. It's unecessary or uncool. As a child, you really just want to belong. The last thing you want is to be centred out from a crowd. And with that comes the crudely phrased term "white-washed". Now as a person who has somewhat experienced this growing up, it's hard not to notice the subtle differences in younglings (haha, I said younglings - not a Star Wars nerd) what your own parents went through.
Anyways, enough about this. I could go on for days. I definitely recommend this movie. I really liked the messege and dramatic performances by both Tea Leoni and Adam Sandler.
